WHEN SCIENCE BLENDS
WITH ART & BEAUTY
This story begins with a revolutionary ingredient on the pigmentation category: MelasylTM. A never seen before artistic standpoint on a breakthrough scientific topic, to magnify and pay tribute to the beautiful diversity of human skin tones.
The campaign
A 100% live shooting campaign using pigments, paints and vibrant colors to illustrate with art - and precision - l’Oréal’s scientific message of efficacy, yet skin-tone respect.
SCIENCE x INNOVATION
The challenge
After many years of research, L’Oréal R&I recently discovered a molecule able to tackle pigmentary disorder with unprecedented results: Melasyl™. The ground-breaking innovation will be placed at the centre of their 2024 major scientific campaign, ultimately becoming their main point of differentiation in the field of pigmentation.
Zorba has been tasked with defining a proprietary scientific storytelling and visualisation to showcase: L’Oréal’s comprehensive knowledge on skin pigmentation and its protection and thhe uniqueness of Melasyl™, the first ever active that intercept excess of melanin before it marks the skin, thus respecting the skin’s natural skin-tone.
The answer
Where most approaches reduce the conversation around skin tones to framed pantone portraits, we chose to adopt a metaphorical narrative, and made colors liquid. The continuous blending and mixing of paint, shades, and pigments not only explores the mesmerizing visual power of colors, but also brings to life the limitless diversity of beauty without letting anyone aside.
The art direction was developed in collaboration with the exploratory artist Thomas Blanchard. Through his work of forms, colors, pigments and textures, we created a powerful and enveloping visual universe to convey the scientific concepts in a desirable and unprecedented manner.
The job
3 x 60s films have been created and produced, each corresponding to 1 scientific concept:
Film 1: Honour and celebrate the living richness and beauty of skin-tone,
Film 2: Educate on the causes and consequences of pigmentary disorders,
Film 3: Unveil the uniqueness of Melasyl™’s innovative mode of action.
No CGI has been produced, the visual compositions have been created out of paint, oil and soap liquid. The films are a mix of shooting and motion design.
